Former England football captain and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir David Beckham turned the national spotlight on education reform during his visit to an MJPAPBCWREIS residential school for girls in Visakhapatnam, where he witnessed Project-Based Learning (PBL) reshaping the future of government education in India

Beckham’s visit—confirmed through a late-night social media post—comes as part of a broader programme led by Mantra4Change, supported by Education Above All (EAA), which is driving systemic improvements across government schools in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Nagaland.
A Global Icon Highlights a Local Transformation
Sir David’s presence added a powerful global lens to a local innovation: classrooms where students learn not by memorising, but by building, collaborating, and solving real-world problems.
At the Visakhapatnam residential school, he interacted with students engaged in multidisciplinary projects—ranging from community sanitation models to STEM-based prototypes—showcasing how PBL nurtures inquiry, creativity, teamwork, and confidence.
“Children everywhere deserve the chance to learn by experiencing and exploring the world around them,” Beckham remarked during his interaction, reinforcing his long-standing advocacy for equitable education through UNICEF.

Mantra4Change’s PBL Initiative: Scale, Depth, and Impact
In partnership with the MJP Society and supported by EAA, Mantra4Change has successfully redesigned teaching and learning across:
107 government residential schools,
18,000+ students, and
107 school leaders.
The programme integrates Project-Based Learning across English, Mathematics, and Science, transforming classrooms into active learning studios where students:
engage in structured projects,
collaborate in teams,
apply concepts to everyday challenges, and
present solutions with clarity and purpose.
For many students—especially girls in residential schools—PBL has become a powerful pathway to build critical 21st-century skills and agency.
A Blueprint for Scalable Public Education Reform
Education experts view this initiative as a compelling example of how public–non-profit partnerships can deliver high-quality, scalable, and sustainable education reform.
By strengthening teacher capacity, enabling school leaders, and introducing structured, curriculum-aligned PBL frameworks, Mantra4Change and EAA are creating a model that can be replicated across states.
Beckham’s visit has injected fresh visibility into this transformation, placing Andhra Pradesh’s residential schools on the global map for innovative, inclusive learning.
